Many parents put their children through privately funded schools. Whilst this is an independent choice of those involved, by doing so they reduce the burden on the state education system. Therefore this petition aims to allow parents to gain tax relief for their choice by allowing them tax relief on payments made in relation to school fees. Under existing arrangements parents and guardians are currently taxed for services which they do not benefit from.

You don’t benefit from them because you’ve opted not to. And how does asking the government to give you some money back reduce the burden on the educational system? Where do you think your rebate would come from?

to consider and look at free access into ALL attractions and places we visit for people with special needs.

by Edward Manning

For those with special needs should be able to have free access into all attractions and places to visit so that it helps them with their budgeting, helps them be more active and they have a more enjoyable life and know that there are places out there for them to enjoy without any fee.

All the government need to do is see if this would be a possible thing with all the attractions/companies and places we visit and say it is for the benefit of those with special needs. Also to think, the government could also look at those with special needs having a card/pass that entitles them free access.

This I believe would also help those with special needs living independently manage their money and have more freedom!

If this could ever be considered as a new rule for those who suffer with special needs, this would be a great thing for those and help them so much with money management.

Possibly, in one of his endless and near-identical petitions he has mentioned it, but I don’t off-hand remember whether Edward Manning has a dependent with special needs or if he himself has special needs (although the quality of his prose is not entirely silent on the issue). But the point is that he appears to spend a worrying amount of his time petitioning the government for such people to be given almost everything for free which other people have to pay for. His other petitions argue against ATM service charges, demand cheaper food and taxis, or ask for cash prizes for quitting smoking.

We have now featured eight of Mr Manning’s petitions on this website, and seven of those have been nothing more than him trying to wrangle free stuff out of Gordon Brown. Three of these have illogically played the ‘special needs’ card.

If you’re reading this, Edward Manning, allow me to clarify: you are not entitled to free stuff.

If I get 2 in a week, that is nearly 1/3 of my total money per week. Some, not all retired have savings in excess of 100s of thousands of pounds, and ex beatles and Rolling Stones members are entitled to free prescriptions purely because they are over 65, yet are very wealthy, some reputed in excess of 100s of millions. So I plead to decency to make ALL benefits means tested, its illogical and unfair for people with millions to claim free charges, whilst some with little have to pay. For a fairer society this MUST happen

I love the assumption that because the surviving members of the Beatles and the Stones are old enough to get free prescriptions then logically they must be doing so.

by MISS AMANDA WATERSON

the goverment want young people to go to work when leaving school the people who cant afford to go to uni or other extra education who want to do the right thing an support themselves get no help as we dont qualify for anything if you are single work full time for minimum wage what can you do you dont qualify for any benefits or council properties to rent unless you wait between 10 and 20 years . the only thing you qualify for is 25%off your council tax its hard to look for further education because if you work full time you are restricted to times and if you finish work at 6 you cant get to collage by 6.30 on public transport so most courses are unavailiable and you have to pay to do them anyway ,so if your struggleing to live on minimum wage how do you pay there needs to be support for people who want to work and help themselves otherwise if they dont know what to do they take the easy way and get others to pay.

Your appalling spelling aside (and I hope one of the classes you’re taking in College is English because, frankly, what the Hell), you do realise you contradict yourself in this petition, right? You say single people don’t qualify for any concessions and then, one run on sentence later, state that they get 25% off of their Council Tax. 25%? That’s almost a quarter!

Two problems here. Firstly, “50p in the pound” is 50% of all total earnings, which is not too shabby if you ask me. Secondly, you’re supposedly representing “the bus company”, whichever one that may be, and you can’t even be arsed to use proper grammar and punctuation in your petition? A petition that ideally you’d like the Prime Minister to read and perhaps do something about? Do you not see what is wrong with that?

by Eamond Mohammed

A better way would be for the government to give every British citizen a good c are service would be a card to use as a pay and go system to pay for there hospital treatment that way people would receive a good standard of service and therefore would be seen and dealt with by consultants and doctors nurses e.t.c… quicker!

For those whom have problems they get extra put onto there cards and if not used the government cant take back that credit of say for example £5,000 person per year. And an extra £1,000 to help for every problem you may have like Diabetics, Cancer, Asthma e.t.c!

Yet if you need more money its down to yourself and family to find the remaining and that’s the way the government should go forward with medical care for the country.

So for example somebody of the age of 18 may not need to use there card for 10 years that means by then they would have accrued £50,000 on there card and may need to use it later on in life.

But all under 18′s are free of charge like the NHS is at the moment this would then be fare to all.

Statistics say that women are better drivers as they are more careful and more considerate drivers than men. In the not so distant past men and women have fought for equality between the sexes and races, and now car insurance companies are hiding behind their statistics that are seen to be sexist in the eyes of equality protesters. All everybody wants is to be equal between each other and no company or corporation should be able to hide behind any statistics that judge you on your gender or what colour your skin is, and so this is why I believe that insurance companies should create equal costs for car insurance for men and women.

I’m a 23 year-old male. You know how expensive car insurance is for me? It’s not cheap, I’ll tell you that much. That’s the nature of car insurance – the young pay more than the old, the men pay more than the women. If you’re in a demographic which is statistically more likely to get in an accident then, well, you’re going to pay more for your insurance. Stop your whining, and stop trying to force sexism in a place where it doesn’t belong.

I am not against people getting benefits who cant work for whatever reason but there are too many families on benefits whose lives are made to easy for them by this government by providing them with grants, free products etc where people who are working are basically thrown to the wayside as we just seem to be a means of extra income for our government

I feel everyone should get EMA, as we are all in education and trying to make something of our lives and we need money to supply things such as travel fayres and coursebooks. I do not think it’s fair also that those on jobseekers allowance that are not getting out there and actually searching for jobs are earning around £100 every two weeks which is what i earn in 5 (I am on £20 a week EMA). I feel EMA should be increased to the same amount as job seekers over the two weeks and everyone in full time education should receive this and not at subsidised amounts depending on what parents earn. It’s not parents that go to college is it? It’s us young people who need to buy our own equipment and travel fayres. I just feel that people when they actually get jobseekers allowance spend it on alcohol and not things which they actually need anyway and taxpayers such as my parents are benefitting their drinking fund with money that could go on my education. I do hope you take note of this petition as young people never really get a say and the chance to show how they feel.

Congratulations for completely failing to understand how EMA works, what it’s for, and what you as a young person should be expecting from the government. I’m trying to work out whether you should spend more time in College or whether it’s simply a waste of time for you.

Stop borrowing money and building up the National Debt. Money is bits of paper coming off a printing press. Let the presses run for a few extra hours producing Real New Money. Use this money on all sorts of national and local projects and for gradually buying in the National Debt for a start. Inflationary? The Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Chairman of the Bank of England must have powers between them to prevent this. This measure will help overcome the recession.
Adopt the following alternative budget and resolve the UK financial problems.

by Mr Ian Longstaff

Please find below my suggestion for fixing Britain’s economy. Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 20 million people over 50 in the work force. – Pay them £1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Twenty million job openings – Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new British CAR. Twenty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis fixed.

4) They must send their kids to school / college /university – Crime rate fixed

5) Buy £50 of alcohol / tobacco a week there’s your money back in duty / tax etc

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back there falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances

Ignoring the crushing financial blow of the Government giving away £20,000,000,000,000, let’s address each point individually:

Workforce shortage, plus a potential shortage of people who may be qualified to perform the tasks previously performed by the over-50s – British companies come grinding to a halt.

There aren’t 20 million cars currently in existence. They would have to be manufactured first. 20 million cars cannot be pulled out of thin air, especially when there are precious few car factories within the UK. In order to meet the quota, current factories have to divert all attention to the new cars. Sales of other cars are crippled because demand cannot meet supply. – Auto industry even more screwed.

Not everyone who owns a house is over 50 years old. – Housing Crisis only patched temporarily.

It is naive to think that just giving kids an education will “fix” the Crime Rate. I went to school with plenty of people who have become criminals of varying degrees. – Crime Rate remains unchanged.

People over 50 wind up becoming dependent on alcohol and tobacco, costing the NHS even more money when they inevitably die, become seriously ill, or try to overcome their addiction.

Honestly, this is probably the single worst idea I have ever seen anyone petition the Prime Minister with. It’s a disaster across the board.

Smoking has become too much of a plague, it forces babies to die before they are born and causes lung cancer for innocent passers-by. It is time we did something about this. My dad always told me “If we banned smoking, there would be more crime” but hasn’t already happened with illegal (pardon my spelling) drugs? Stop the manufacture and when the supply runs dry, ban smoking, crime goes up a little, smoking related deaths go down a lot! Cigerettes are worse than cocaine, as they harm people around you as well as you.

Throughout the UK, there are too many dogs owned by too many irresponsible people. By re-introducing an annual dog licence that costs an amount per dog that is enough to put these people off, dog problems (mess, barking, attacks etc) will be reduced.

When you say “irresponsible people” I’m sure you mean “poor people, who are all stupid.”

stop throwing good money after bad by funding the banks. They’re at the top of the food chain of our economy. They corrupted it and creamed off the wealth of nations for their own selfish gain. They’ve received billions of pounds and not passed the money on to investors and borrowers. If taxpayer’s money not yet been given to them is redirected to industry, manufacturing and services then the economy will start to recover from the ground up. You can’t harvest fruit without a tree, and a tree can’t grow without roots. The roots are the common people. If they are given money in the form of grants for sustainable improvement and development a need will be created. That need will require manpower and products to satisfy it. This will in turn be met manufacturing industries. These processes will generate, support and be supported by commerce. Small scale sustainable development is flexible and durable. It employs more people and is less prone to catastrophic collapse.

by Andrew Hope

For example, if the predicted billions being given to banks to prop them up were diverted and given to private homes, and commercial/industrial premises as grants for insulation and micro generation (photovoltaic, solar water heating, ground source heat pump, air source heat pump, wind turbines, hydrogen generators, rain water collection, grey water recycling etc) as appropriate. This would make all properties carbon negative, producing more electricity and hydrogen gas than they need, and contributing to national grids for energy, and fuelling transport. With all these properties generating surplus power there would be no need for new nuclear PowerStation’s, freeing further billions of pounds for coastal protection against sea level rise, protecting millions of acres of housing, industry and agriculture. Defences like the Severn Barrage could also generate power. All this would create new industries making, installing and maintaining these systems, eliminating unemployment.

An interesting idea, if totally unrealistic and ungrounded in reality. Also, I find myself wondering if Andrew Hope is the main character in a bizarre geek-parody of “Crank”, in which he has to keep himself alive by constantly typing as much as possible. If he stops typing, he dies. Exciting stuff.

by Barrie Skinnard (rejected)

The recession could be easily solved by giving all UK families one million pound sterling, this would boost the economy as the money would be spent in shops & saved in banks. This would mean a total investment by the government of approximately £40 million pounds with the current UK population of some 67 million people. The government has already thrown several billion pounds of tax payers money into the banking system yet banks are still failing to financially boost the economy with business’s going bust & repossessions at a all time high. With this proposal people would once again be able to pay their mortgages, there would be nobody on benefits as they would be over the threshold! There would be hardly any need for any social housing! The overall cost to the government would be considerably and progressively less as time went on; thus making Britain great again!!

This petition was rejected because:

Your figures are not accurate.

I assume this is referring to the idea that £1,000,000 × 67,000,000 ÷ (average family size) = £40,000,000. This is an unfair slander against Barrie Skinnard, who of course knows full well that the average family size is 1,675,000. This is why East Enders is so hard to follow these days. And also the origin of the name of new sitcom ‘One Million, Six Hundred And Seventy Four Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ninety Eight Children’. Hm.

Maybe his figures are wrong. I just wish the Government had made that response in the form of a lolcat.

I believe it is time for the current government to start fulfilling the role for which they are employed and start acting in the interest of the British people as a whole.Continuing to throw good money after bad cannot possibly lead to a resolution to the economic problems that our country is facing. The deregulation of the banking system for which we have the previous government to thank was criminal enough, however I doubt that the consequences would have been so dire had our current government pulled the reins in at an earlier time. Having no manufacturing industry to speak of this country has depended to the expense of all else on the high economic activity that the finance sector has provided, this has now ground to a halt leaving Britain with very little. The German government have given money to the people rather than banks with incentives to purchase new cars, however our government will not give money to the British public for fear they might save it, their plan involves handing astronomical figures to the very people who we know are thieves and confidence tricksters. Place the money into the hands of the British people to whom it belongs before we go into complete meltdown.

Credit ratings for individuals maybe fair or poor, loans are required at low interest rates if the population has any hope to combat this recession. Loans are not available to clear significant borrowings. Therefore despite large monthly repayments the outstanding debt is not reduced. Therefore no disposable income is created to stimulate the economy.

The bank could directly clear the credit account and close it.Cards destroyed. Credit ratings to be marked to indicate caution on any new card issued until 50%of the loan is cleared. This could work in a similar way to a voluntary arrangement with creditors without the stigma of bankruptcy or risking ones home.

So… taking out a loan in order to pay off a credit card, which is more or less a loan in itself. Seems kind of counter-intuitive to me.

I believe mostly to warmer climates for health reasons. Why then, is it that having paid their contributions all their working lives and in some cases still paying taxes to the U.K. Inland Revenue ,a pensioner who decides to move abroad is then expected by the U. K. Gov. to survive for their remaining years on the pension frozen at the rate at the time they leave, wherever they choose to live. It causes a great deal of bitterness when people who have paid nothing into the system are able to claim an increasing pension untill their demise, simply because they decide to live in the U.K. with its wonderfull benefit system . It is time the U.K. Gov. started caring more about its indigenous population , in this case pensioners no matter where they choose to live. When the U.K. apparently can find the money to hand out ,as we all can see , inland and abroad , they can find the very much smaller ammount to take care of the pensioners who helped to make Britain what it once was. We pensioners deserve better treatment than we are recieving in our remaining years ,surely that is our human right.

This would have a greater effect on kickstarting consumer spending than the 2.5% reduction in the VAT rate at a much lower cost. Most shoppers hate paying for parking. Allow everyone a maximum of 2hours with the same fines for exceeding the time limit.
As the only option for law-abiding citizens who have no shame in wanting to pursue a certain path, alcohol does more harm than good. It costs families, individuals, their friends and lovers, the NHS so much.

The well respected adage that ‘everything in moderation’ is ok, is not possible when there is only one option. It is best to go one way or another, and not sit on the fence.

Certain people will never change. That’s life and it’s their chosen course, how they choose in their minds to live it to the full.

I believe that the problem will never conveniently disappear until we go one way or another, and that as we seem so intent on going one way then we should put our hearts where our words are and see what happens.

Let’s see how certain folk react when deprived of their drug of choice. Will they all get fat on bacon butties? Will they turn to shrooms or something even harder? Good people are suffering because they are only free to indulge in one thing, and the issue is never going to disappear as long as that thing remains freely available alongside the prohibition of all else.

Stuart Cross, DEFENDER OF THE EARTH, has apparently never studied the history of Prohibition. Or, at the very least, he’s never seen that episode of The Simpsons where the sale of alcohol is prohibited and Homer becomes the Beer Baron.

Hey, look who’s back! It’s Teresa Wright, who has taken a break from proselytising to stop an even more odious threat: that of a New World Order government. I know what you’re thinking: “Is this scheme to establish a New World Order in fact a reality?” Well, she addresses that:

Is this scheme to establish a New World Order in fact a reality? Yes it is. If you do not believe this I encourage you to study the United Nations documents and also the treaties which, once ratified by individual nations, become INTERNATIONAL LAW. The United Nations created the Commission for Global Governance, if you don’t believe this, visit the United Nations website and look it up.

The Commission for Global Governance released a report: Our Global Neighbourhood, that predicates a world court, a global tax, and global police force. And the U.S. State Department Publication 7277 outlines a one world police force under the United Nations. So many prominent world leaders are calling for a one world government the intention is obvious. Yet most people are so occupied by life’s responsibilities, careers, sports and television, they have little time to study what’s going on in the corridors of power.

With the ever-increasing terrorist threat to our country, direct action groups such as Plane Stupid endager the lives of the flying public and aviation workers by disrupting our airports and attempting to access restricted areas. As well as creating delays, it puts a strain on airport police patrols, thus leaving them unable to respond should a real terrorist attempt to strike at a UK airport. As a law forbids protest within one mile of Parliament, we who work at airports would like a similar law introduced to forbid anyone trying to disrupt the operations of a UK airport.

Alright, look. The disruption thing I’ll grant you (although equally, that is kind of the point). But the reason that peaceful environmental protests strain the police is that the police invariably respond in a preposterously overblown show of force. And the reason that these protests raise security concerns is because they show that terrorists could get into the airport, not that they enable them to. Raising the concerns can only help stop people breaking in. (Although what a terrorist would accomplish by breaking into a part of an airport which is basically a giant road I don’t really know.) Basically, what you want is added protections against having a bit of a rough day at work. Yes?

A democracy is a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who elect people to represent (not control) them. But the problem we have is that the citizens have little control over what the Government actually does once elected. We vote in a party instead of specific policies. We therefore call on the Government to make it easier for the people who vote them in, to have a say in the policies their Government should follow.

As far as SAFARI is concerned, we can then finally address the policies necessary to assist those falsely accused of committing crimes.

Of course, the Government doesn’t have to do as we ask in this ePetition (and thereby lies the problem within our system!) but we hope they will do so.

by BAS (rejected)

Yet again, Britain’s motorists have been hit with a 2p increase on fuel tax. It seems motorists are the staple target for raising revenue under this government. The government has just promised to help everyone by reducing VAT to 15%, but on the other hand are taking more from motorists. Many people rely on their car for myriad reasons, one of which is getting to work. It is shortsighted to tax so heavily the very people who work and therefore help sustain the economy. More redundancies and benefit claimants are not what this country needs to keep it moving healthily.

The US pay around 30p per litre and Australia around 42p. Britain’s motorists are being stifled because the government recognises that fuel is essential to many of us.

Most people drive out of necessity. Please help workers to stay in work and ordinary people to go about their every day business by reducing the tax on fuel and find a less damaging alternative.

You know who else isn’t responsible for the credit crisis? Footballers. I vote we stop taxing them.

On a more serious note, maybe the reason fuel tax is increasing is because city centres are full of immobile cars in long jams sitting there pumping clouds of toxic gas into populated areas. Granted that’s only a problem at peak hours whereas fuel tax applies across the board, but maybe you should have thought of that when you all almost unanimously voted against the congestion charge. What the hell did you think was going to happen?

See also: this petition, this one and this one.

Enterprise Inn’s have announced that both Carlsberg draught and Castlemaine XXXX will be withdrawn from its supply list at the end of January next year.
In a letter to its 7750 licensees across the country, seen by The Publican, the company said the decision had been taken because“customers and retailers have moved away from these brands over the last few years.”
The letter received by pubs last week said Enterprise had conducted a review into its standard lagers, which shows the two beers were “no longer viable”.
The letter said: “As part of the review we have concluded it is no longer viable to offer Carlsberg Draught Lager and Castlemaine XXXX as the number of stockists and volumes have fallen to such a low level.”
My thoughts are with people like myself who rely on their regular customers, many of which are carlsberg and XXXX drinkers, of which will now go elsewhere where these brands are sold! In a very challenging market place with declining beer sales and pubs closing at a rate of around five a day, surely this is suicide to our establishments??

Seriously, aside from the rampant stupidity of requiring companies to sell unprofitable things to prop up an untenable industry, XXXX is the worst (commercial) beer I have ever tasted. It should be banned, if anything, for being described as lager while tasting like bad bitter shandy. Trade descriptions act.

by Winnie Burrows

Most people over the age of 60 or with medical conditions would like to travel – unfortunately it has become an astronomical cost to get insured to travel abroad. Most people who are on medication are probably better off health-wise than those that are not as their health is being monitored.

As an example someone I know wanted to travel to Canada for 3 weeks they were asked a lot of questions and were then told that they could not be insured for the current illnesses that they have already (hence you will have to pay for it yourself anyway if you get ill) and that the cost would be £1,000 plus.

We need to have a fairer system. You pay for travel insurance most of your life and then when you get to the age where you might need it you cannot have it. Surely the government can make arrangements with other countries, especially Canada and Europe where the health care is available for British Citizens whilst on holiday as long as they don’t do crazy things. .

At the moment, if anyone wants insurance they’ll be hit with “astronomical” costs if they have a pre-existing condition. What you’re saying here is that Old People should be treated differently just because they are Old People. Which is… hang on, isn’t this positive discrimination again?

I never get tired of the “quote a bit of a sentence and to change the context” joke. Good times. Anyway, petitions.

make people file a hit and run report for cats.

by Sarah-jayne nolan

My main reason of starting this petition was to stop cruelty tocats as it is disgusting the amount of people that get awaywith it however I then found out that the new animal welfareact 2007 states: Anyone who is cruel to an animal may be bannedfrom owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison.Which in my option is about time, however I found this stilldoes not cover if you run over a cat. At the moment the lawstates that if you run over a dog you have to report it but ifyou run over a cat nobody cares. I feel in my option and imsure many people will agree with me that this is wrong. Dogsand cats are both beloved pets that should be treated the same.We should have to report these crimes. I do understand a lot ofthe time a cat may jump in front of your car and it is agenuine mistake but it still needs reporting as I stated beforecats are beloved family pets and there heartbroken families will be searching for them. I understand that there is a similar petition however I believe mine to be more reasonable and realistic.

This would definitely be a reasonable use of Police time.

Call a snap election, allowing the public to decide if the increased national debt is a good investment to ease the economic downturn.

by Colin Macey

Given the exposure of the plans to increase the rate of VAT after the next election, and the subsequent statement from Mr. Brown that VAT will not be raised beyond 17.5%, my concern is this: If the government has been forced to rule out this method for repaying some of the increased debt, how will they do it now? Before it is too late, I believe that the electorate should have the opportunity to assess the economic proposals from all parties, and democratically choose the most appropriate in the form of an election. I would ask for your support in this matter by signing up to this petition

But the British public don’t seem to know how to solve the crisis. And theyv’e come up with some pretty silly ideas so far. There are petitions from members of the public asking the Prime Minister to abolish VAT, to not abolish VAT, to write off all debt, to nationalise it, to strip Bankers of any honours they may have received, to stop lending money to other countries, to yell at Iceland, and, for some reason, to build memorials for Baby P. All of these ideas are touted as “solutions” to the crisis, and I think we can all agree they’re pretty much bollocks.

The Nation should show it’s appreciation to all those who helped build and protect this country all their life’s by making funeral expenses a thing of the past. This affects everyone, especially the poor.

This is, again, an absolutely superb idea given the current economic climate.

Because they are calling from abroad the TPS cannot help. They are harassing us and we can’t stop them!!

Actually, these call centres would have been contracted by a company with a legal presence in the UK, so the TPS very much can help. If you’re calling you, you need to find out the name of the company they represent so you can lodge a complaint with–… oh. I guess you’re asleep now.

For example, an 0870 number costs 10 pence per minute (whereby 4.5pence per minute goes to the local hospital).

I am concerned about people being allowed to change their names easily without a check for criminal records and debt problems. A law should prevent this, because they can cover their past and make it difficult to find them. A safety check could be done on a application.

Unless they’ve changed things a little since I moved out of England, I’m fairly certain that the Government don’t issue you with a new Birth Certificate when you change your name by deed poll, so you’ll have to provide documentation to support the name-change whenever you do things like open a bank account, acquire a passport, and apply for some jobs. This petition is pretty redundant if you ask me.

by Megan Hurst

It is understandable that an amount of money has to be paid into the system to accomodate degree courses and the facilities that go along with them, such as libraries containing the latest reference materials and computing equipment. However it is unnacceptable that over a 3 year degree course the tuition fees can increase between each year. For example, in your first year a course can cost £3070 however in your second year it can be increased to £3145. Students are at university to improve their future prospects but are not given the best start to their future with at least £9000 worth of debt on their shoulders. This is only on a 3 year course, there are many courses that last a few years more and therefore carry more debt, this should be changed.

So what you’re actually asking for is for Universities to never increase their fees ever, which is a nice if very silly idea.

persuade the FA to hold an England charity football match on St. George’s Day.

by Graham Smith of www.stgeorgesholiday.com

The passion of England football fans is world famous. They sing their country’s National Anthem like no other fans. They devote huge amounts of effort and money to follow the England team around the world.

We urge the Prime Minister to persuade the FA to hold an England charity football match on St. George’s Day – England’s National Day.

We don’t expect the first team squad, the under-21s or similar will do fine. We just want to see if the FA are as passionate about England as the fans.

You mean, because the PM has such a hold over the FA? This is only here because you couldn’t find an email address for the FA, isn’t it? Also I think “passion” is perhaps putting it more politely than most of the world would.

Enforce life sentences and chemical castration as punishment for any person directly involved or who assists in the murder, torture or molestation of children or vunerable members of society.

by Lee Sheridan

I have recently been disgusted with the number of crimes against children and our vulnerable members of society, which are hitting our headlines at the moment, and the seemingly soft sentences dished out to the sadists and peadophiles who commit these crimes. I would like as much support as possible to this petition for tougher punishment, to STOP NOW this cruelty and aggression towards children and persons who are unable to defend themselves. Being a father myself, I am unable to comprehend how any human being can cause harm, pain, suffering, neglect and even death to any human being, let alone the defenceless. Please please please, lets unite against these monsters and eradicate them from our society forever, if we can save even 1 life then this petition will have been worth it. Harsher sentences would surely deter the evil beings from committing these crimes.

See, chemical castration or similar of paedophiles is perhaps not a bad idea. If you have an urge to do awful things and there’s medicine to make it go away that seems fairly sensible. I imagine there are paedophiles who would volunteer for that. But this is chemical castration as punishment for murder. That’s just barbaric.

As a pupil, I am simply appalled that instead of actually learning English grammar at GCSE level (with Edexcel at least) we are only required to analyse stories and poetry; write to describe, review and argue; and write about non-fiction texts.
I do not disagree with these current aspects of the syllabus, but I ask that the examination syllabi be more thorough in their examining.
A separate section which tests basic understanding of correct grammar and spelling would be a fantastic way to help stimulate our amazing language. I cannot see how some persons manage to cope with the detailed essay writing required without having a section on grammar.
I know it may seen very pedantic, but it simply infuriates me when people do not use the subjunctive mood correctly, or punctuate in the wrong places.
It is all right when people do these things accidentally, but I know for a fact that young persons nowadays are simply ignorant of correct grammar because it is simply not taught fully.
I hereby suggest that the Government ask the examination boards to make sure that they include a comprehensive grammar section which includes all the nuances of our mother tongue.

Our aim is to preserve the innocence of children.
This means that all sex and intimate relationship education is the responsibility of parents and not schools. Sex education stimulates curiosity and destroys innocence, and can lead to experimentations. It is not a satisfactory option to allow individual children to be withdrawn from the lessons because these topics become a seemingly acceptable conversation for the playground to which all children are exposed.

The so called BBC scandal regarding Jonathan Ross pointed out the fact he is paid £18,000,000 a year by the BBC. I have never seen anyone on TV worth anything like that sort of money. The fact that the BBC would throw away that sort of money on one person disgusts me. If the BBC are willing to waste licence payers money like that then it is definitely time the licence was reduced year on year leaving the BBC to earn it’s living the way all other broadcaster do.

In recent weeks it has emerged that media coverage of a story resulted in many people making complaints about a radio show that the vast majority hadn’t even tuned in to. As a result the programme in question was axed. As the story unfolded it would seem that with the media manipulation it was taken out of all perspective. Now, those listeners who tuned in every week were denied their choice of how TV licence money was spent. A support group was set up on a social networking site to match the number of complaints, which it did and more. But,the authorities have chosen not to recognise this public opinion and have dismissed the group as misguided youths. I would like to see more respect for the online community and the numbers of people who set up support groups, these numbers should be taken into consideration for reporting procedures.

Media glorifies violence/immorality as ‘cool’ & to be aspired to, influencing young minds & doing nothing to discourage today’s gang culture. We don’t want these shows even AFTER the watershed. We’re told if we don’t like it, then switch off! This allows standards to further degrade. We demand a return to decency/morality by broadcasters. The supposed defence that censorship is ALWAYS wrong, doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Society censors behaviour all the time. If not, why have laws, as all behaviour, even murder, would be OK! The constant drip of immoral/indecent viewing/listening material, can & does lower society’s standards too. This is not a simplistic conclusion. It’s common sense!

Millions of adults appear to lack even the most basic cooking skills and we need a radical solution to break this cycle.

The Proposal:

1. Get a group of the most popular and trusted chefs (including Jamie Oliver and Delia Smith, for example) to come up with a small number of VERY easy to cook, healthy yet tasty recipes. Simple classics, nothing fancy. Trial them to make sure they are genuinely popular among all social groups. Choose, say, ten, then call them “The Ten” or something, and get witty adverts everywhere promoting the project.

2. Blitz the country with lessons on cooking “The Ten”. Teach ALL secondary school kids, maybe in restaurant kitchens if schools can’t do it. Give them for school dinners and invite the parents in. Get parents in to learn with their kids in the evening. All free.

3. Get all supermarkets to have “The Ten” ingredients all in one prominent place- they could of course brag about having “The Best Value Ten” or “The Organic Ten” or whatever . People might buy them just out of convenience.

4. Every 2 or 3 years there could be a vote of some kind on which recipes to drop/ add.

This sounds more like a pitch for a Reality Cooking TV series than anything else. I’m quite sure Jamie Oliver already did this a few years ago, anyway.

This petition is in response to the second phase of Ofcom’s Public Service Broadcasting review and the regulator’s agreement in principal that ITV can reduce its local and regional news commitments. Ofcom is currently consulting over these matters which would see regional television services cut from seventeen to nine. If finally approved this would have serious consequences for communities in the UK. We believe that television news is an important feature of a democratic society and that there should be an effective alternative to the service provided by the BBC. We are calling on the government to ensure that its review of broadcasting in the UK sets out proposals which secure the future of local and regional news programming and that decisions made by Ofcom do not pre-empt this debate. Yet, the Government actually states on every cigarette packet that “This is a Government health warning: cigarettes can cause serious damage to health and even death” and then allows it to be sold through every outlet. Therefore should automatically be written off on customer mortgages until such point as these are repaid in total to the BOE, and the tax payer. The problem has been irresponsible lending, and the creation of money using interest. We should not thus be using this bail out to create another 500 Billion which the banks can indiscriminately lend on, creating more fictional money and another go round on the wheel

Ensure that a fairer tax system is put in place. One based purely on income is much fairer than one based on property as many people inherit property while still earning minimum wage. Why should someone earning £12,000pa pay the same tax as someone earning £120,000pa purely based on their property? Its time to get this country growing again, instead of the imminenet recession we are all now facing due to failures within the government, or perhaps the rich are still getting favours if they offer funding which would explain the current status of our great country.

Hang on, postcode? Have I missed something here? So council tax payments wouldn’t depend on where you live, or therefore which council you pay them to? If I pay for your council’s spending, do I also get to vote on what it does? Because that would just be not having local councils. How do you not get what council tax is?

And if we just give everyone money, presumably from taxes, isn’t that just the same as not doing anything?

And on the subject of solving financial crises using needless beaurocracy…

restructure the banking system such that all deposits are collected directly by the Government.

The roles of deposit taking and lending need not be done by the same institutions
Each individual opens an account with UK Government- be it Bank of England or National Insurance office or Tax Office. Salary payments are sent to that account. Mortgage, utilities and telephone are paid by direct debit only from this account. Surplus cash may be paid little or no interest- most individuals will have limited funds in this account any way.
Savers will transfer funds to banks to earn higher returns and will bear the risks associated with that. Banks will provide loans including mortgage and it will borrow from the central pool. Data protection is key and will be kept in UK and the service provider will not have access to the data. Set up taskforce now.

What exactly is there to stop someone setting up their own bank which has low interest and low risk? They could call it “a sock full of money under the mattress,” or “buying a house”. You don’t need the government to do that, and mandating it is just going to confuse matters. Bottom line, I have no idea what this is supposed to achieve.

Also, I reckon the government is definitely the best possible organisation to trust with everyone’s bank details. That absolutely cannot lead to any problems at all.

by Vin Patel

Unsolicited mail betrays a patronising and degrading attitude by targeting victims during private time: like an unwelcome visitor it is an invasion of privacy and clearly incurs an unacceptable disposal cost (including time, effort, environmental degradation).

Simply make it illegal unless it is expressly requested. An offence could be relatively easy to prove using existing infrastructure and dealt with in an increasingly deterrent fashion.

Unsolicited mailing allows the mailer to distribute all sorts of psychologically tainted propaganda: This is at least undemocratic if not immoral.

If unsolicited mailing was banned, they would have to concentrate more on improving their products.

Surely, citizens have painfully earned the right to peace and quiet to pursue what is most important in their precious lives; Earned the right to stop being harassed, distracted and generally preyed upon by unsolicited mailers just for the sake of ruthless opportunistic profit.

It’s rare to see something simultaneously oxymoronic and tautological, but if anyone can manage it it’s a petitioner.

request Peter Mandelson to give up his "transitionary payments" worth £234,000 despite giving up his post as Trade Commissioner.

by Anil Vadgama

Peter Mandelson will continue to receive taxpayer-funded EU pay worth £234,000 over three years – in addition to his annual ministerial salary of £104,386 despite giving up his post as Trade Commissioner. This is not acceptable in the current economic climate because it adds insult to injury to the tax payer who is bailing out banks and funding his pay. It smacks of greed

Well we can ask, but I think I know what he’ll say…

by Jon Griffin

I keep thinking that the way to rescue our economy – if we must spend 50 billion would be better distributed like this…

Distribute the funds via the individual debts of britains population.

The average households debt is £35,000

It would cost around 1 trillion to liquidate us all.

The banks would receive over 1 trillion in REAL money

The people of Britain would be debt free and able to move freely. Which translates as spend more freely.

There would be no risk involved in re-couping tax payers money.

Lots of people would be very happy.

If that sounds ridiculous – mainly because of the huge unforeseen amounts of cash that would be required in reality, then consider the fact that 700 billion as proposed by the US – will be a drop in the ocean. Wall street traders in the know say that there are as yet Trillions of hidden $s still waiting to surface and are currently not recorded and/or are hidden from regulators.

Does this still sound like such a useless idea?

I petition the government to consider this option.

I have literally no idea what this guy is suggesting, but I can see from here that it’s moronic. He seems to be suggesting that we give unprecedented amounts of money to the worst investors in the country.

In one case a mother got in trouble because her daughter displayed the doll in her window. She got visited by the police!!

If the Golliwog is a symbol of hatred then so too should be any/all religious idols. I have no faith so when I see a religious idol on display it offends me – can I then tell the police and have them get the owners to take it down? What about Action Man – he’s racist against white people because he looks like a football hooligan, let’s make him a symbol of hatred too.

A hatred rule should be a universal rule – not discriminatory.

Stop picking on the Golliwog.

Yeah! That’ll show ‘em! Because it’s not possible that even one of them is not personally to blame or deserved it at all.

By Ian Mitchell

Unfortunately we have a problem with obesity in this country and general lack of physical fitness in children. This comes from the lack of official programmes that can allow children to partake in sport within a controlled environment, around people they are comfortable with. Parents seek for a quick fix throwing their kids at clubs with children they do not know or have not built relationships with. Pumping investment into schools as a seperate fund so children can come in on a Saturday and Sunday and learn/partake in 2 or 3 sports a weekend will give these children the opportunity to continue this on in their chosen sport. The parents should not have to pay for their kids to be given opportunities, the government has a responsibility to develop a strong sporting nation where children want to play all sports and be able to pass this on when they grow older to their children.

Ben: ”I would like schools to do a thing that they’re already doing, but… y’know… diversify it. Or something.”

SAY NO to any congestion charges or workplace parking charges IN TRAFFORD. Keep Trafford and its roads and surroundings free. No road pricing taxes here. No workplace parking charges. No new council taxes on parking. No new road tolls. No tax on travel. No government bribes to coerce travellers onto inconvenient and expensive public transport. Congestion charging is very inconvenient for the user. The London scheme only makes a profit due to penalties. Other schemes could lead to unexpected large debts with no way to dispute them. How can a driver know in advance how much a journey will cost? Road pricing and workplace parking charges are not about reducing congestion, but pricing private cars off the road. They damage business, commuting and social activity. They hurt most those least able to pay. They require a vast expensive and intrusive monitoring system. This is an intolerable interference with our freedom. If the council is determined to press ahead, then let the people of Trafford decide in a fair referendum whether they want any congestion charging or new parking taxes.

Ben: The “Association of British Drivers” (presumably some coilition of drivers living in Britain) are vehemently against having to pay for… well, anything. So much so that today alone they’ve set up the exact same petition for the Trafford, Bolton, Wigan, Cardiff, and Portsmouth areas. Admirable, perhaps, but perhaps their cause would be better served with one ruddy great big petition that everybody can not sign instead of lots of small region-specific ones.

Ben: I get a chuckle out of the title of this petition, which doesn’t give you any hints as to what this petitioner is actually going to ask for, but mostly I’m amused by the fact that the only other person who has signed this petition seemingly goes by the name “I think this is a good idea”. I’m also concerned about what would happen to people who wake up at 2:37 in the morning and absolutely, positively have to have a Tescos Blueberry Muffin.

Hello. Since this is the first post, I’m going to start by explaining the premise. If you’ve got here by reading the whole archive backwards then you should feel free to skip this bit.

The British Government, bless their little cotton socks, have a website where any member of the public who finds themselves sat in front of a computer that presumably a smarter person has plugged in for them can start an online petition to the Prime Minister. The petitions tend to be racist, outside the government’s remit, selfish, dumb or sometimes all four. For some time now, me and Ben have been using Google Reader principally as a way of flagging up particularly dumb ones, and it’s high-time we made a special blog just for them. And here it is.

To start off with, here are some from our archive, whose authors are in no way trying to couch a specific complaint in general terms:

call an immediate referendum of the taxpayers of this land and give them an opportunity to say whether or not they agree with their money being ploughed in to compensate bad decisions by bank executives and supporting investors who were greedy and put their money offshore for higher gain.

by keith jones of taxaying pensioner without political affilliation

Banks are now in the position where it matters not how they perform, the taxpayer will pick up the tab. No mention has been made of safeguarding against directors awarding themselves huge bonusses out of the taxpayer guarantee. Investors who went offshore for higher gains are also being offered compensation. Why are these greedy people not being asked to repay the high gains they got, before asking for taxpayer money to be handed out to them. The taxpayer MUST be given an opportunity to state they either do or do not support this position. The government keeps spouting that these are unusual times. The government should take the unusual step, therefore, of allowing the people who it will affect most the choice of putting a stop to it by giving them a legally binding referendum, immediately.

Andrew: Dear Government, please defer important decisions to unqualified people.

Amend the Parliament Act so that when the governing political party changes its leader, which results in a change of prime minister then the new prime minister is required to hold a general election within 91 days of taking office.

by John C Beach

When the governing political party changes is leader which results in a change of prime minster then the new prime minister should be required to hold a general election within 91 days of taking office. In the event that the change is due to sudden serious ill health or death of the previous prime minister then subject to parliamentary approval then the general election can be delayed for 91 days

Andrew: Why 91 specifically?

design a tax that makes the thousands of celebrities donate to charity before the general public do.They should be taxed on every £25000 they make for example.

by Sam

Everybody I talk to is fed up of the greed the celebrities of the world have. They spend without thought for anyone worse off than themselves. They then have the cheek to front televised ‘phone-in’ charity programs asking the general public to part with money they haven’t got. We all sympathise with all these great charities but there shouldn’t be any need for them as the total value of the world’s rich list would cancel out any charitable need without trying. We want to see most if not all of the celebrities in this country giving to these charities before they call on the hard up and make them feel guilty.

Andrew: I wonder what newspaper Sam reads.

Ban the use of the word ‘Unlimited’ if the subject in question is limited.

by Martin Patient

Too many companies are now abusing this word, typically these are companies offering internet services. An example would be of Company A offering mobile/home broadband with unlimited usage. Then in the terms & conditions there will be a clause that restricts the customer to download only 1Gb of data per month.

This is NOT unlimited.

Unlimited is defined as being: not limited, infinite or unrestricted.

If no current law prevents this, then one should be made to cover this grey area.

Andrew: I’m pretty sure this is already banned. Do we need a law for every adjective?

Standardise all drug laws based on a scientific evaluation of direct harm to the user and addictive qualities by professionals(not MPs).

by John Seymour

The current drug laws are flawed in that certain drugs such as alcohol and tobacco are perfectly legal, where as other drugs that are less harmful than these two are illegal. This undermines the message that drugs are harmful, as the users are fully aware that the scientific community consider drugs such as ecstacy and cannabis to be of equal or less danger than alcohol or tobacco. This makes illegal drugs seem harmless, and the drugs laws seem ridiculous. We propose that the government stregthen its chosen message by either:

a) Illegalising alcohol, tobacco and any other considerably harmful intoxicating substances and introducing them to the current ABC classification system.

OR

b)Legalising those drugs that are less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, based on an evaluation by professionals in the appropriate field (not the clouded opinion of MPs, which is has been the faliure on other similar attempts).

Andrew: In theory a sound notion, but all those smokers who find they’re class B addicts while the pot lovers just have to stand outside might disagree.

Make it illegal for a company to advertise for a job, recieve an aplication and not respond or respond with no valid reason for dismissal.

by Matthew Rowe

Make it illeagal for a company not to respond to a job aplication or to respond with no valid reason. this will stop all of the illeagal age, racial discrimination when applying for jobs

Andrew: The fact that you spell ‘illegal’ with two ‘a’s and ‘receive’ with an ‘ie’ in a petition to the PM might be a clue why you get passed up for jobs.

Ben: UGH. Rampant stupidity.

Nationalise my student debt.

by Andrew Fisher of LEAP

To petition the Government to nationalise all student debt.

We note that the Government has nationalised the debt of banks that have run into financial difficulty, and believes that graduates should be afforded the same treatment.

Graduates pay an extra 9% tax on all their income over £15,000 leaving many struggling to pay housing costs and bills.

Graduates currently owe the Government in excess of £16bn — far less than the total used to nationalise either Northern Rock or Bradford and Bingley.

Therefore graduate debt should be written off and all fees cancelled for current students.

Ben: “My student debt” or “all student debt”?

reduce the amount of homework in schools due to the recent push up of the age limit to leave.

by Malcolm McNeill

The amount of homework children receive from school should be reduced due to the school leaving age being raised to 18 years old. Children spend on average 6 hours a day in school, and an extra couple of hours doing homework. Attending school for 6 hours a day of a childs life is enough, rather than the additional homework and the recent push up to an extra year of school whilst you’re in your adult years. You can get married and have children by that age, could you find enough time for excessive piles of homework stacking up on your desk?

Ben: This is what happens when twelve year-olds find the Government Petition website.
