The current position at UK border points is that visitors who are allowed to enter the UK who have had to apply for a Visa are not then actively counted back out again when they are required to leave. For example if they were to overstay their visit nobody would actively go to seek them, or even be aware they hadn’t left the country. This effectively means that once they are admitted they could stay indefinitely. The USA has a proper system in place for all visitors who enter their borders with visa’s and they have, as a result, much better control of their Borders and Immigration Issues.

Allow a Registrar the right to reject baby names of (s)he considers the name to be inappropriate.

by Colin M. Taylor

We’ve all seen it on the news: a Media celebrity has a baby and then gives it a name that can, at best, be considered ‘unusual’. For example, the Beckhams calling their son Brooklyn or Katie Price calling her daughter Princess Tiaamii. Whilst the names might seem to be a good idea at the time and suit their bohemian lifestyle, the parents, perhaps, forget that the child is going to carry that name for the rest of their life. By all means, call your dog Fifi but not your child… Of course, this is then imitated by certain members of the population who emulate what they see in celebrity gossip magazines and give their own children ‘unfortunate’ names. The purpose of this petition is to allow Registrars to refuse to accept names for children that may be considered frivolous or otherwise inappropriate.

Oh fuck off, will you? Yes, celebrities give their kids ridiculous names. So what? What is considered a “normal name” (as you so call them in the URL for this petition) shifts from year to year, decade to decade. There was a time when “Beryl” was probably considered a normal name, and now it’s an old person’s name. Who’s to say we won’t all be calling our kids Princess Tiaamii in the future?

I mean we won’t, obviously, but… y’know, it’s not the Registrar’s place to decide what name you can and cannot give to your child.

One could argue that having ATMs anywhere encourages gambling, because there’s nothing stopping you taking out a wedge of money and then walking, or perhaps driving or catching a bus, to your favourite betting house. So, y’know, might be better to get rid of ATMs altogether.

What would we do without the increasingly mad Keith Jones, eh? I have no idea what he looks like, but I imagine a curmudgeonly old man, maybe with a ridiculously ornate moustache. His hair is thinning. Not to say I support the petition, but Keith has a wonderful way of just being hilariously self-righteous that means that most of his petitions get rejected.
I know Keith is a friend of the site and all, but really, he can fuck right off.

He has massively misunderstood every aspect of this story: Binyam Mohamed is not, as far as we know, a criminal — all charges against him were dropped; he is not ‘running rings around the government — David Miliband specifically requested his release; the cabinet is not Scottish — that surely shouldn’t even need mentioning? My favourite part, though, is the URL: he likes to pretend he’s making a case about security (except when it’s about taxation), but his petition is called NoMoreForeigners.

But then, I can’t help love this petition for the last five words. They’re a little work of surrealist genius.

To protect UK manufacturing jobs and the recession hit motor industry from complete collapse the Government must reduce the level of VAT on the sale of all new motor vehicles manufactured in the UK to 1%.
To avoid potential deflation while buyers wait for the reduction in the VAT payable the reduction must be backdated to January 1st 2009.

It is also thought that shaving is an extreme act of supreme vanity showing superiority over the God who created him.

Babies that are beaten because their parents are not suitable and responsible to be just that, parents!

At the end of the day appling for a licence would mean you have to have half a brain and some common sense which I would say are two good starting qualifications for to be parents.

There needs to be some form of law to bring a new life into this world, sign the petition if you agree that something serious should be done to STOP alot of people bringing a new life into this world because they just aren’t suitable, responsiable, drug free, non alcoholic or good enough to do so.

End!

Dee Murrell has apparently been very deeply affected by the tragedy of poor little Baby P. Enough to petition the Prime Minister:

Introduce a ‘Baby P’ Law making it compulsory for Social Workers etc. to physically examine Children at Risk at every visit.

by Dee Murrell

Social workers should legally insist that all clothing, except for maybe underwear or nappy, be removed and food/paint/makeup/ointment etc be cleaned off at every visit. As highlighted in Baby P’s case, clothing and ‘chocolate’ can hide a multitude of sins. Children old enough to speak for themselves may be too afraid to do so.

If this was implemented, abusive carers would soon understand that it won’t be so easy to hoodwink social workers or to hide signs of physical abuse.

…and then again, an hour later.

introduce a “Baby P’ Law to make regular baby health checks compulsory as babies are at greater risk of being murdered in the first year of life than any other age.

by Dee Murrell

Up to four children die each week in England from abuse or neglect & many more suffer serious harm or injury. The NSPCC says that babies & toddlers are particularly vulnerable to physical abuse.

Many instances of child abuse are never brought to the attention of the authorities. It should therefore be compulsory for carers to take babies & toddlers for a health check & physical examination at least every 3 months, for the first year or two, to help detect any signs of neglect or physical abuse. If carers fail to attend a health check, social services should be alerted and the child seen without delay.

Responsible carers already take their children to health centres regularly, so this system should only serve to highlight any irresponsible, neglectful or abusive carers. It would help prevent the very young and most vulnerable from slipping through the net and hopefully prevent further tragedies like that of Baby P and Tiffany Wright.

Thank you.

Am I the only person who thinks it’s a bit demeaning to ask a parent to strip their baby down to just their underwear? Even prisoners of war get better treatment than that.

So Mr Gordon Brown stop sitting on your lazy backside and do something about these people who wish to upset "Us religious people." Because it is the best thing that ever happened to me was giving my life over to christ. So he would change me for the better now I think of others more and I am happy. I am prepared to make a change and turn the whole world to Jesus Christ. Amen

I suspect that a major contributing factor to people casually blaspheming is the raging stupidity of your previous three petitions.

Many of these are joke petitions, but I’m not altogether sure why we’ve ignored the rest. They’re all genuine ideas submitted in what must pass for ‘good faith’ among the variously racist, bigoted, reactionary thugs who think they’ve cracked the credit crunch if only the bail-out was divvied up between people just like them. The only difference is that someone in Whitehall decided to click a different button, usually because the petition made no apparent sense. Here is a selection of recently rejected petitions; please let us know in the comments if you think we should mine this huge natural resource of stupid.

Sherlock Holmes is one of Britain’s best known fictional characters, internationally recognisable and loved by many. This cultural icon is currently at risk of being ruined by an idiot. The idiot I speak of is Guy Ritchie, creator of a myriad of mockney guff such as ‘Snatch’ and ‘Rock ‘n’ Rolla’. One can only imagine what Guy Ritchie will do to Sherlock Holmes. The only thing we can be certain of is that it will be packed full of mockney caricatures and leave you feeling culturally violated.
I concede it is not possible to ban Guy Ritchie from realising his hideous vision of making a film of Sherlock Holmes but it may be possible to stop him doing it in Britain. There must be a law on the statute book that can be used.

In our opinion, too many people are ‘getting in on the act’ of citizenship and spoiling the general makeup of Englishness by not adhering to the well-established English way of life and furthermore attempting to overwhelm the English indigenous population. We propose that any people(s)who choose to reside in this country should adhere vehemently to the English way of life, swear allegience as such, and thier public presence should be as an English citizen and not impose thier culture in any way, shape or form on the English way of life. To ensure this, there should be relevant laws imposed on all citizens equally within the English community.

Now, those listeners who tuned in every week were denied their choice of how TV licence money was spent. A support group was set up on a social networking site to match the number of complaints, which it did and more. But,the authorities have chosen not to recognise this public opinion and have dismissed the group as misguided youths. I would like to see more respect for the online community and the numbers of people who set up support groups, these numbers should be taken into consideration for reporting procedures.

I’m trying to work out whether there is a serious issue to be faced here, or if you just want Gordon Brown to accept your Friend Request.

Media glorifies violence/immorality as ‘cool’ & to be aspired to, influencing young minds & doing nothing to discourage today’s gang culture. We don’t want these shows even AFTER the watershed. We’re told if we don’t like it, then switch off! This allows standards to further degrade. We demand a return to decency/morality by broadcasters.

This petition is in response to the second phase of Ofcom’s Public Service Broadcasting review and the regulator’s agreement in principal that ITV can reduce its local and regional news commitments. Ofcom is currently consulting over these matters which would see regional television services cut from seventeen to nine. If finally approved this would have serious consequences for communities in the UK. We believe that television news is an important feature of a democratic society and that there should be an effective alternative to the service provided by the BBC. We are calling on the government to ensure that its review of broadcasting in the UK sets out proposals which secure the future of local and regional news programming and that decisions made by Ofcom do not pre-empt this debate. This petition has been launched by the National Union of Journalists.

Retailers would just not be allowed to sell such products to the general public. Yet, the Government actually states on every cigarette packet that “This is a Government health warning: cigarettes can cause serious damage to health and even death” and then allows it to be sold through every outlet. It is allowing faulty and dangerous goods to be sold generally with full knowledge. Revenue received by the Government from the cigarette industry is an odious resource.

Incinerators produce massive amounts of Carbon Dioxide, far more than a conventional gas fired powered station.

Recycling is cheaper and greener than incineration

Whatever enters the incinerator leaves the facility, either to landfill or ‘sky-fill’. Carbon dioxide, dioxins and acid gases are not present in the waste; they are all created by the burning. Burning plastic inefficiently in incinerators is not the way to manage residual wastes, making it much harder to meet climate change targets. Disposing of a community’s wastes may be their biggest contribution to climate change.

I may be repeating myself here, but I’m fairly sure that the reason we have local Councils is so that the Government doesn’t have to deal with comparatively small issues like this.

With election promises this is not the case. We have the blanket smoking ban and no referendum on the EU treaty, against what was promised and on what the government was elected upon. I propose that if a promise made is not kept by the winning party without very just cause, we the employers of government should have some way of reponding, not just waiting until the Government decides it wants an election.

By Ian Mitchell

Unfortunately we have a problem with obesity in this country and general lack of physical fitness in children. This comes from the lack of official programmes that can allow children to partake in sport within a controlled environment, around people they are comfortable with. Parents seek for a quick fix throwing their kids at clubs with children they do not know or have not built relationships with. Pumping investment into schools as a seperate fund so children can come in on a Saturday and Sunday and learn/partake in 2 or 3 sports a weekend will give these children the opportunity to continue this on in their chosen sport. The parents should not have to pay for their kids to be given opportunities, the government has a responsibility to develop a strong sporting nation where children want to play all sports and be able to pass this on when they grow older to their children.

Ben: “I don’t want my kids to play with riff-raff I haven’t properly vetoed, and I don’t want to haver to pay for it.” If you don’t want to pay for your kids, why did you bother having them?

The lack of diversity in subjects relating to life beyond school is causing children to be un-appreciative of others, the impacts on their own lives, and the advantage that having independence can lead to. No workplace parking charges. No new council taxes on parking. No new road tolls. No tax on travel. No government bribes to coerce travellers onto inconvenient and expensive public transport. Congestion charging is very inconvenient for the user. The London scheme only makes a profit due to penalties. Other schemes could lead to unexpected large debts with no way to dispute them. How can a driver know in advance how much a journey will cost? Road pricing and workplace parking charges are not about reducing congestion, but pricing private cars off the road. They damage business, commuting and social activity. They hurt most those least able to pay. They require a vast expensive and intrusive monitoring system. This is an intolerable interference with our freedom. If the council is determined to press ahead, then let the people of Trafford decide in a fair referendum whether they want any congestion charging or new parking taxes.

Ben: The “Association of British Drivers” (presumably some coilition of drivers living in Britain) are vehemently against having to pay for… well, anything. So much so that today alone they’ve set up the exact same petition for the Trafford, Bolton, Wigan, Cardiff, and Portsmouth areas.

Hello. Since this is the first post, I’m going to start by explaining the premise. If you’ve got here by reading the whole archive backwards then you should feel free to skip this bit.

The British Government, bless their little cotton socks, have a website where any member of the public who finds themselves sat in front of a computer that presumably a smarter person has plugged in for them can start an online petition to the Prime Minister. The petitions tend to be racist, outside the government’s remit, selfish, dumb or sometimes all four. For some time now, me and Ben have been using Google Reader principally as a way of flagging up particularly dumb ones, and it’s high-time we made a special blog just for them. And here it is.

To start off with, here are some from our archive, whose authors are in no way trying to couch a specific complaint in general terms:

call an immediate referendum of the taxpayers of this land and give them an opportunity to say whether or not they agree with their money being ploughed in to compensate bad decisions by bank executives and supporting investors who were greedy and put their money offshore for higher gain.

by keith jones of taxaying pensioner without political affilliation

Banks are now in the position where it matters not how they perform, the taxpayer will pick up the tab. No mention has been made of safeguarding against directors awarding themselves huge bonusses out of the taxpayer guarantee. Investors who went offshore for higher gains are also being offered compensation. Why are these greedy people not being asked to repay the high gains they got, before asking for taxpayer money to be handed out to them. The taxpayer MUST be given an opportunity to state they either do or do not support this position. The government keeps spouting that these are unusual times. The government should take the unusual step, therefore, of allowing the people who it will affect most the choice of putting a stop to it by giving them a legally binding referendum, immediately.

Andrew: Dear Government, please defer important decisions to unqualified people.

Amend the Parliament Act so that when the governing political party changes its leader, which results in a change of prime minister then the new prime minister is required to hold a general election within 91 days of taking office.

by John C Beach

When the governing political party changes is leader which results in a change of prime minster then the new prime minister should be required to hold a general election within 91 days of taking office. In the event that the change is due to sudden serious ill health or death of the previous prime minister then subject to parliamentary approval then the general election can be delayed for 91 days

Andrew: Why 91 specifically?

design a tax that makes the thousands of celebrities donate to charity before the general public do.They should be taxed on every £25000 they make for example.

by Sam

Everybody I talk to is fed up of the greed the celebrities of the world have. They spend without thought for anyone worse off than themselves. They then have the cheek to front televised ‘phone-in’ charity programs asking the general public to part with money they haven’t got. We all sympathise with all these great charities but there shouldn’t be any need for them as the total value of the world’s rich list would cancel out any charitable need without trying. We want to see most if not all of the celebrities in this country giving to these charities before they call on the hard up and make them feel guilty.

Andrew: I wonder what newspaper Sam reads.

Ban the use of the word ‘Unlimited’ if the subject in question is limited.

by Martin Patient

Too many companies are now abusing this word, typically these are companies offering internet services. An example would be of Company A offering mobile/home broadband with unlimited usage. Then in the terms & conditions there will be a clause that restricts the customer to download only 1Gb of data per month.

This is NOT unlimited.

Unlimited is defined as being: not limited, infinite or unrestricted.

If no current law prevents this, then one should be made to cover this grey area.

Andrew: I’m pretty sure this is already banned. Do we need a law for every adjective?

Standardise all drug laws based on a scientific evaluation of direct harm to the user and addictive qualities by professionals(not MPs).

by John Seymour

The current drug laws are flawed in that certain drugs such as alcohol and tobacco are perfectly legal, where as other drugs that are less harmful than these two are illegal. This undermines the message that drugs are harmful, as the users are fully aware that the scientific community consider drugs such as ecstacy and cannabis to be of equal or less danger than alcohol or tobacco. This makes illegal drugs seem harmless, and the drugs laws seem ridiculous. We propose that the government stregthen its chosen message by either:

a) Illegalising alcohol, tobacco and any other considerably harmful intoxicating substances and introducing them to the current ABC classification system.

OR

b)Legalising those drugs that are less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, based on an evaluation by professionals in the appropriate field (not the clouded opinion of MPs, which is has been the faliure on other similar attempts).

Andrew: In theory a sound notion, but all those smokers who find they’re class B addicts while the pot lovers just have to stand outside might disagree.

Make it illegal for a company to advertise for a job, recieve an aplication and not respond or respond with no valid reason for dismissal.

by Matthew Rowe

Make it illeagal for a company not to respond to a job aplication or to respond with no valid reason. this will stop all of the illeagal age, racial discrimination when applying for jobs

Andrew: The fact that you spell ‘illegal’ with two ‘a’s and ‘receive’ with an ‘ie’ in a petition to the PM might be a clue why you get passed up for jobs.

Ben: UGH. Rampant stupidity.

Nationalise my student debt.

by Andrew Fisher of LEAP

To petition the Government to nationalise all student debt.

We note that the Government has nationalised the debt of banks that have run into financial difficulty, and believes that graduates should be afforded the same treatment.

Graduates pay an extra 9% tax on all their income over £15,000 leaving many struggling to pay housing costs and bills.

Graduates currently owe the Government in excess of £16bn — far less than the total used to nationalise either Northern Rock or Bradford and Bingley.

Therefore graduate debt should be written off and all fees cancelled for current students.

Ben: “My student debt” or “all student debt”?

reduce the amount of homework in schools due to the recent push up of the age limit to leave.

by Malcolm McNeill

The amount of homework children receive from school should be reduced due to the school leaving age being raised to 18 years old. Children spend on average 6 hours a day in school, and an extra couple of hours doing homework. Attending school for 6 hours a day of a childs life is enough, rather than the additional homework and the recent push up to an extra year of school whilst you’re in your adult years. You can get married and have children by that age, could you find enough time for excessive piles of homework stacking up on your desk?

Ben: This is what happens when twelve year-olds find the Government Petition website.
