Currently aviation fuel has zero duty applied to it, neither is VAT levied on it. If The United Kingdom and the EU are serious about reducing the gasses which are said to be responsible for global warming then aviation fuel duty should be brought in line with petrol. The UK government should actively campaign for this law to be passed by all of The EU.

Except this would kill the aviation industry in the UK – all the airlines would just fuel up their planes in countries that still offer tax-free fuel.

I don’t think buying airplane fuel is the same as buying petrol. They calculate the amount of fuel for each flight. The fuel has to be brought into the country somehow. And if the entire EU agreed on a fuel duty, that would cover most flights that start and/or land in the EU.
