I beleive that being a Lupus sufferer along with thousands more we should be able to receive free prescriptions I take 12 medications daily to keep my condition stable & will have to for the rest of my life or until a cure is found Along with thousands of other sufferers I beleive we should be exempt from charges like similar conditions that are exempt

I see petitions like this all the time. “Dear Gordon,” they say, “I have a particular illness, and therefore I think everyone who has the same illness shouldn’t have to pay for their prescriptions even though it’s only about £6 a pop or however much it is now. I mean that’s not a lot of money in the long term but dammit I’m sick and I deserve special treatment.”

I assume you work, Melody. If you didn’t work you’d get your medication for free. If you do work then, well, you can afford £6.50 every now and then.

“If you didn’t work you’d get your medication for free”

Incorrect!

If you are on jsa or ib which is now esa and it is contribution based and your partner is working then you pay. The way the DWP law works is that your partner has their pockets picked by the government by having to support the non-working partner despite the non-working partner having paid into the system for years.
You see, you pay income tax and nat ins as an individual, but when you need to call on the system you’ve paid in to you and your partner are classed as one unit. Remember, there are no married couples tax allowances anymore. If I’m wrong then please kick my arse.

Okay, so it’s slightly more complex than implied by the Snark. The solution to the issue you described is to threshold income tax for couples rather than individuals, not to give out free prescriptions for any disease a petitioner has.

My solution is to work on cases that deal with individuals who have paid into the system and treat them as individuals when they need help and not financially penalise people because they are the partners of people who are in receipt.
