Just a quick break from our regular programming to celebrate a dumb response to a petition. These are written by the actual government. First, the petition:
China has continued to support the illegitimate Junta that continues to rule Burma. Recently Burma has seen massive peaceful protests from Monks and ordinary citizens alike, despite this the Junta has cracked down and begun the murder of the peaceful protesters.
When an emergency session of the UNSC was called – China blocked Sanctions against the Junta.
I feel that it is Immoral and unjust that China be able to benefit from western economies and obtain money that would come from the Olympic games they are due to host.
I call on the British government to boycott the ’08 Olympic games in response to this disgraceful situation.
Now, the response:
Political reform in Burma remains a priority for the Government and the Prime Minister personally. China is in a unique position to help bring about positive political change in Burma… We welcome China’s willingness to play a positive role and their offer of $15 million in aid. The Prime Minister has raised the situation in Burma in his discussions with Prime Minister Wen, most recently during UN General Assembly week in New York. …
The Beijing Olympics were, above all, an opportunity to celebrate genuine Olympic ideals of sportsmanship, including the considerable British success. For the UK, the handover to London 2012 gave additional significance to the Games. The Beijing Olympics were also a vital milestone in China’s re-emergence onto the world stage and an important means to increase mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world. Supporting such re-engagement is firmly in our national interest. …
But our approach of engagement with China is not at the expense of human rights. It is integral to their promotion. The Prime Minister made clear to his Chinese counterparts while he was in Beijing that we continue to have serious concerns about China’s human rights record, and will continue to focus on this both bilaterally and through the European Union.
This is all well and good, but this was published on Monday. One might argue that that isn’t helpful.

As Taxpayers we are grieved to see that this money was given to banks and not put into our health and education systems.
Because, y’know, it’s not like a collapsing economy would’ve had an impact on the running of the NHS, is it?
BRITISH service personel are being discriminated against because of what they do for a job. I would like to see something done about it. In the U.S.A the troops are loved and are shown appreciation where as here in our home country we are discrinated against.
If you’d kept your voice down I wouldn’t need to call you out on just how much of an idiot you are. Also, not everyone in America loves “the troops”. Just so you know.
The clocks should not go back in the winter they should be left alone so that it remains lighter at night.
I don’t think Daylight Savings works the way you think it works.
Millions of adults appear to lack even the most basic cooking skills and we need a radical solution to break this cycle.
The Proposal:
1. Get a group of the most popular and trusted chefs (including Jamie Oliver and Delia Smith, for example) to come up with a small number of VERY easy to cook, healthy yet tasty recipes. Simple classics, nothing fancy. Trial them to make sure they are genuinely popular among all social groups. Choose, say, ten, then call them “The Ten” or something, and get witty adverts everywhere promoting the project.
2. Blitz the country with lessons on cooking “The Ten”. Teach ALL secondary school kids, maybe in restaurant kitchens if schools can’t do it. Give them for school dinners and invite the parents in. Get parents in to learn with their kids in the evening. All free.
3. Get all supermarkets to have “The Ten” ingredients all in one prominent place- they could of course brag about having “The Best Value Ten” or “The Organic Ten” or whatever . People might buy them just out of convenience.
4. Every 2 or 3 years there could be a vote of some kind on which recipes to drop/ add.
This sounds more like a pitch for a Reality Cooking TV series than anything else. I’m quite sure Jamie Oliver already did this a few years ago, anyway.

This petition is in response to the second phase of Ofcom’s Public Service Broadcasting review and the regulator’s agreement in principal that ITV can reduce its local and regional news commitments. Ofcom is currently consulting over these matters which would see regional television services cut from seventeen to nine. If finally approved this would have serious consequences for communities in the UK. We believe that television news is an important feature of a democratic society and that there should be an effective alternative to the service provided by the BBC. We are calling on the government to ensure that its review of broadcasting in the UK sets out proposals which secure the future of local and regional news programming and that decisions made by Ofcom do not pre-empt this debate. This petition has been launched by the National Union of Journalists.
There’s already an “effective alternative” – it’s called “the Internet”. Look! Luton has its own online community hub thingy! I bet other towns and cities across the UK do, too!

There must be some way of juggling the revenue so that Camelot profitability, good causes and HM revenue and customs are not penalised. Let’s increase consumer confidence, the feel good factor and help families reduce household debt.
You win the “Hey, The Government Don’t Regulate This” Lottery.
If a car sales man were to write a message on the windscreen of his cars “This car can cause damage to health and even death” he wouldn’t be allowed to sell it to the general public. If the food and drinks industry were to do like wise that the consumption of their food and drinks can cause serious damage to health and even death, their products would be withdrawn from all the shelves and on it goes for every industry. Retailers would just not be allowed to sell such products to the general public. Yet, the Government actually states on every cigarette packet that “This is a Government health warning: cigarettes can cause serious damage to health and even death” and then allows it to be sold through every outlet. It is allowing faulty and dangerous goods to be sold generally with full knowledge. Revenue received by the Government from the cigarette industry is an odious resource. Surely, the Government can be prosceuted.
Aww, bless.

This one appeared today
We love Jesus so much that we would grieve Him a lot by not being allowed, by law, to follow our conscience when He tells us that gay practice contravenes the bible. We love gay people and are aware that their lifestyle has led the NHS to prohibit some of them to donate blood, because of the health risks involved. We cringe at the society that this legislation is helping to create – a society of people being branded as criminals for honestly following the dictates of their conscience. Is this really just and fair?
It’s all well and good, but let’s just try a find-and-replace and see what falls out…

I’m going to go with ‘yes’ on this one.
And to go with it, a couple of other divinely inspired nonsense from the archives.
We are requesting that ratings produced for DVDs and other digital media by the BBFC will incorporate warnings of language considered blasphemous to Christians; that the name and/or title of Jesus Christ, when used without reverence, be noted. We believe that in the sanctity of one’s home people should be given greater control to wisely choose what they see and hear; that entertainment products should carry sufficient warning for this to be achieved.
UK institutions already go to great lengths to protect the feelings of other religious and secular minorities. Sincere Bible-believing Christians should also be offered this same respect and consideration. We do not think that this is too much to ask in a tolerant society. We are not even asking for such offensive material to be banned as many others do, because we know how futile this would be in light of the abolition of the blasphemy laws, but we only request that we are given simple warning of its presence in recorded purchasable media.
Andrew: Start your own damn ratings board and do it yourself. If there are as many people who give a damn as you think then it will be easy.
Ben: Oh, fuck right off.
I believe that any places of worship should now be built as multi-faith centres and not just for one religion to support the diverse cultures in this country.
As land is in short supply now and very expensive I think it would be justified to build one building to cater for all faiths and communities.
Instead of having separate places of worship, people will meet from all faiths and practises. This will provide an opportunity for people from all backgrounds and faiths to meet and understand each others religions.
Recently there was a story about a mosque application in Torquay for a very small group of muslims. To make the project of building a place of worship more viable, build a place of worship for all.
We need to have places of worship for all, not just one or two religions who have the loudest voice.
Andrew: Or how about, you can build whatever you want as long as you can pay for it? Including taxes. That would solve it, yes?

Keep education in Brandon. Our school is the heart of our community, and reorganisation will mean its closure. Please register your wish to keep Breckland School open.
Presumably Brandon is populated entirely by small children.
Incinerators produce massive amounts of Carbon Dioxide, far more than a conventional gas fired powered station.
They are not economic and generate electricity at only around 35% efficiency, compared to over 65% by power stations.
Recycling is cheaper and greener than incineration
Whatever enters the incinerator leaves the facility, either to landfill or ‘sky-fill’. Carbon dioxide, dioxins and acid gases are not present in the waste; they are all created by the burning. Burning plastic inefficiently in incinerators is not the way to manage residual wastes, making it much harder to meet climate change targets. Disposing of a community’s wastes may be their biggest contribution to climate change.
I may be repeating myself here, but I’m fairly sure that the reason we have local Councils is so that the Government doesn’t have to deal with comparatively small issues like this.
Advertisers are commonly misleading the public by making claims that use science sounding terms to make claims that are scientifically wrong. For example claiming a Magnet can attract dye leaching from clothing.
It is my opinion that these claims are misleading children and affecting the education of the current school population.
If only there were some kind of… of office of communications that dealt with issues like this.
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to stop the demolishion and or redesign of the Astoria Theatre London W1
But Gordon Brown has already bought himself a new golden Hard Hat just for the occasion!
And now, deviating from the theme slightly…
In any other part of life, for example a contract of employment, there are certain duties that a person promises to carry out. If you odered a screwdriver and a hammer turned up you would send it back and if an employee refuses to make good on their conditions of employment they would be sacked. With election promises this is not the case. We have the blanket smoking ban and no referendum on the EU treaty, against what was promised and on what the government was elected upon. I propose that if a promise made is not kept by the winning party without very just cause, we the employers of government should have some way of reponding, not just waiting until the Government decides it wants an election.
But then how can Politicians tell us the sweet, soothing lies they need to get us to vote for them?

since the original 50 Billion is tax payers money. This money should be offset against any mortgages held by any bank taking cash. also the remaining 250 billion and 200 billion in loans and gaurantees. This is money invested by the tax payer. Therefore should automatically be written off on customer mortgages until such point as these are repaid in total to the BOE, and the tax payer. The problem has been irresponsible lending, and the creation of money using interest. We should not thus be using this bail out to create another 500 Billion which the banks can indiscriminately lend on, creating more fictional money and another go round on the wheel
I love the idea here that because the money has been paid by the taxpayer that they are therefore entitled to it back at the moment. In fact I love this idea so much I might just have to hug it and squeeze it until its eyes pop out of its fat little head.
Many service personnel are affected by the travel time to their home town when returning from active service in the conflicts we are currently involved in. Journey time should be allowed and R/R should start from an estimated time they arrive in their home town. Personnel who are not UK based are also at a disadvantage as they often have a couple of days of travel which is at times taken from their allocated R/R.
Right, because this is an utterly airtight idea that can’t be abused at all. “No Sarge, I’m not home yet. I’m… er… stuck in traffic.”
think that we should break all economic and security alliances with the USA and concentrate on alliances with EEC countries particularly France and Germany.
Right. Because what could possibly go wrong?
Continuing instability in the City can only be attributed to sanctioned speculative activity in financial organisations. Such activities undermine and could permanently damage the economic well-being of the United Kingdom. These activities should be classified as economic terrorism and the Terrorism Acts invoked to deter these greedy, self-serving profiteers.
Wait, so now the computers are responsible for the credit crunch? I’m really confused, here.

We call for the Tescos planning application in Dartford to be properly scrutinised. It is a huge proposal which is not sustainable development, and will have serious implications for the local economy, and traffic congestion.
Why do we even have local Councils if you’re just going to put up a petition on the Government website that only six people are going to sign?
We all know bankers have been paid huge bonuses over the last few years. Now the whole banking system has collapsed and the UK is going into a recession, people are loosing their jobs, house prices are falling fast and no-one can get a mortgage. Rather than the banking industry paying for its own mistakes the taxpayer is bailing them out to the tune of £2000 per tax payer, most people who mess up to that extent at work would loose their jobs and not be paid a huge bonus and golden handshake. Now is the time for the bankers who were paid huge bonuses to shoulder their share of the problems they have created and pay a retrospective windfall tax.
“I heard someone at the Pub say that this Economy problem thingy is all the fault of Highly Paid Bankers. String ‘em up, I say!”
this is to lift the unfair ban on cold calling sales in the personal injury market. This ban was introduced without consulting anyone who used cold calling and only affects P.I. companies the rest of the world is allowed to carry on and this is unfair and a restriction of trade. There is also the fact that more than 80% of claims go unclaimed as the average person in the street is unaware that they are entitled to be compensated, by banning cold calling which was informative to the general public these people are no longer being informed of what they are entitled to. also we believe that this ban is a basic infringment of civil freedoms and is discriminatory as it only applies to one type of industry.
This is how I imagine your average Personal Injury cold-call going:
Caller: Hello, can I speak to Mr. Swanson, please?
Mr. Swanson: Speaking.
Caller: Hello there! Have you recently been in an accident that wasn’t your fault?
Mr. Swanson: Er… no, I haven’t.
Caller: Oh.
[There is an uncomfortable pause.]
Caller: Okay then. [click]
It is very unfair to have to pay just to apply for university. This petition lobbies for scrapping two sets of fees; the application fee by UCAS, and the testing fees for entrance exams many courses need. In the credit crunch, it is not fair to levy such charges.
The UCAS application fee has increased this year from 15-17 pounds, an inflation busting increase of over 10%! This should be free.
As well as applying, one needs to pay for certain entrance exams before going to certain courses, like medicine and dentistry, law and vet. studies.
These all cost alot of money, from 75 pounds for UKCAT to 230 pounds for the GAMSAT test, to get into medicine. BMAT, LSAT and others have their own fees. For some, you can get a bursary, but this is still only partial.
All fees associated with university applications need to be scrapped, as it makes it a heavier burden on those wishing to achieve their potential.
No one said reaching for the stars was easy. Well, apart from S Club 7.

We believe that drivers should be concentrating on the road and not on their speedo while driving.
This is not a request for an email response as to why we cannot ban these cameras, but a demand for action
What a brilliant idea. Yes, let’s remove all the speed cameras. We should also switch off traffic lights, and make road signs more of a guideline than something to be strictly adhered to. And why are we forced to drive on the left side of the road? We should be able to swerve left and right as we see fit. Hell, let’s drive on the pavement as well, just to make things more fun.
this is a blatent and unjustifyable waste of money in the current economic climate, inlcuding the fact these networks sound all to similar to the pay per mile road scheme, which we disagree with, and the gross invasion of privacy, as of which we wholely object too.
Yeah! It’s none of the Government’s business whether we’re exceeding the speed limit and/or driving dangerously for any period of time!

The law needs to be changed now to stop another family having to bury their children like the parents of Arron and Ben Peake have had to do because a man decided to drive under the influence of alchol only to serve maybe 3 years in prison many lives have been taken over the years and it will not stop them reacurring please bring in a zero tolerence law now before more families have to suffer the pain and anguish like Arron and Bens family.
Although adding a breathalyser test to the Internet is starting to look appealing.

Everyone petitioning today thinks they’ve solved the credit crunch. Turns out that the problem in almost all cases is that they have to pay for things that I could be paying for.
Ensure that a fairer tax system is put in place. One based purely on income is much fairer than one based on property as many people inherit property while still earning minimum wage. Why should someone earning £12,000pa pay the same tax as someone earning £120,000pa purely based on their property? Its time to get this country growing again, instead of the imminenet recession we are all now facing due to failures within the government, or perhaps the rich are still getting favours if they offer funding which would explain the current status of our great country.
Hang on, postcode? Have I missed something here? So council tax payments wouldn’t depend on where you live, or therefore which council you pay them to? If I pay for your council’s spending, do I also get to vote on what it does? Because that would just be not having local councils. How do you not get what council tax is?
While the foundation of the economy is a sound banking system we believe that banks that are bailed out should not be allowed to charge subscription fees to customers as this would in effect mean that the customer is being charged twice and that this is unfair.
This ban should last until their loan is repaid in full
Oh, so now I’m paying your bank charges as well as your council tax? Can I have your interest?
as many small businesses are going to the wall because of the credit crunch and the economic climate, we would like information on, or the government too, set up an assistance package to assist small businesses in financial trouble.
But… those businesses folding isn’t exactly going to cripple the economy, is it? Okay, so the whole ‘bailout’ thing isn’t exactly fair, but if we give a load of money to small businesses, that won’t be fair either unless we give it to individuals and large businesses too. And if we just give everyone money, presumably from taxes, isn’t that just the same as not doing anything?
And on the subject of solving financial crises using needless beaurocracy…
“Extraordinary times..This is not a time for conventional thinking or outdated dogma but for the fresh and innovative intervention that gets to the heart of the problem. – Gordon Brown
The roles of deposit taking and lending need not be done by the same institutions
Each individual opens an account with UK Government- be it Bank of England or National Insurance office or Tax Office. Salary payments are sent to that account. Mortgage, utilities and telephone are paid by direct debit only from this account. Surplus cash may be paid little or no interest- most individuals will have limited funds in this account any way.
Savers will transfer funds to banks to earn higher returns and will bear the risks associated with that. Banks will provide loans including mortgage and it will borrow from the central pool. Data protection is key and will be kept in UK and the service provider will not have access to the data. Set up taskforce now.
What exactly is there to stop someone setting up their own bank which has low interest and low risk? They could call it “a sock full of money under the mattress,” or “buying a house”. You don’t need the government to do that, and mandating it is just going to confuse matters. Bottom line, I have no idea what this is supposed to achieve.
Also, I reckon the government is definitely the best possible organisation to trust with everyone’s bank details. That absolutely cannot lead to any problems at all.

We also ask you to: 1. Demand independent research into this “FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENT CAUSED BY ENVIRONMENTAL TRIGGER” – which does have a distinguishing feature from other illnesses/conditions with similar symptoms i.e. the ES/EHS CAN AND DO recover if they are isolated from the cause(s) of the sensitivity.
2. Demand monitoring by personnel trained or researching in this field who are aware of the effects of pulsed microwave radiation/electricity.
3 Ensure that the Human Rights of the ES/EHS are observed fully and recognise electro-sensitivity as a disability in the UK, as in Canada and Sweden. 4 Provide safe zones so that the ES/EHS have places to recover/live in OR replace pulsed microwave radiation with a safer technology.
Andrew: For crying out loud. This condition is entirely made up. And yet 73 idiots, including a couple who’ve included their degree credentials, want to see the government spend millions fighting it.
Stop the commercial sale of flu vaccinations. Keep it for the at risk groups only such as the elderly and those with medical conditions. The overuse by hypochondriacs will lead to resistant strains. Companies like Boots buying up the supply often means GP surgeries can’t get the jabs in time to be effective.
Andrew: No, you’re thinking of antibiotics. Do you see any ‘resistant’ strains of smallpox? Measles? Mumps? Tetanus? Polio? Tuberculosis? Rubella? No, you do not.
I propose the government, instead of paying for and/or helping with the costs of loft insulation, cavity wall insulation,double-glazed windows, etc., installs solar panels for heating, hot water and all electrical appliances within the home. (I already have double-glazing, loft insulation and wall cavity insulation and it does not make the slightest bit of difference to my energy bills – I still pay over £1,000 per year for my 2 bed terrace – and thats before the prices started to rise. How many of you are finding the same?) This will be more economical and a safer alternative to fossil fuels or nuclear power in the long run. for the disabled, long-term sick, the elderly and parents of young children, all single parents with children under the age of 18 years and all council tenants out of work, for the government to fund this installation, at no cost to the tenant/home owner. For those who work, means test them as to how much they could put towards the cost… implementing a repayment scheme for the installation of the solar panels.
Andrew: You’ve just arbitrarily decided that your way is best, haven’t you?
And my favourite science fail on the whole site…
the move for longer daylight hours for the next coming years sounds quite a good and excelant idea especially for all out goers with learning disabilities, that likes to get out much more during the summer months.
this country will also be benefitting a lot more with longer daylight hours for the next coming years if it can mean a three year experimental, or trial period to begin with at first.
there will be a referendum taking place down in jersey a week this wednesday coming up on october the 15th 2008 about some of the islanders voting for the move for longer daylight hours.
if the channel islands go ahead with the move for longer daylight hours, then we in england should follow suite as well.
Andrew: Dear Government, we need another Sun.
Ben: Leave the sun on for longer? Do you know how much it costs to leave it on during the day as it is? We’re not *made* of money! Get off my back!

Unsolicited mail betrays a patronising and degrading attitude by targeting victims during private time: like an unwelcome visitor it is an invasion of privacy and clearly incurs an unacceptable disposal cost (including time, effort, environmental degradation).
Simply make it illegal unless it is expressly requested. An offence could be relatively easy to prove using existing infrastructure and dealt with in an increasingly deterrent fashion.
Unsolicited mailing allows the mailer to distribute all sorts of psychologically tainted propaganda: This is at least undemocratic if not immoral.
If unsolicited mailing was banned, they would have to concentrate more on improving their products.
Surely, citizens have painfully earned the right to peace and quiet to pursue what is most important in their precious lives; Earned the right to stop being harassed, distracted and generally preyed upon by unsolicited mailers just for the sake of ruthless opportunistic profit.
It’s rare to see something simultaneously oxymoronic and tautological, but if anyone can manage it it’s a petitioner.
Peter Mandelson will continue to receive taxpayer-funded EU pay worth £234,000 over three years – in addition to his annual ministerial salary of £104,386 despite giving up his post as Trade Commissioner. This is not acceptable in the current economic climate because it adds insult to injury to the tax payer who is bailing out banks and funding his pay. It smacks of greed
Well we can ask, but I think I know what he’ll say…
I keep thinking that the way to rescue our economy – if we must spend 50 billion would be better distributed like this…
Distribute the funds via the individual debts of britains population.
The average households debt is £35,000
It would cost around 1 trillion to liquidate us all.
The banks would receive over 1 trillion in REAL money
The people of Britain would be debt free and able to move freely. Which translates as spend more freely.
There would be no risk involved in re-couping tax payers money.
Lots of people would be very happy.
If that sounds ridiculous – mainly because of the huge unforeseen amounts of cash that would be required in reality, then consider the fact that 700 billion as proposed by the US – will be a drop in the ocean. Wall street traders in the know say that there are as yet Trillions of hidden $s still waiting to surface and are currently not recorded and/or are hidden from regulators.
Does this still sound like such a useless idea?
I petition the government to consider this option.
I have literally no idea what this guy is suggesting, but I can see from here that it’s moronic. He seems to be suggesting that we give unprecedented amounts of money to the worst investors in the country.
There have been a few news stories where people have been persecuted for displaying Golliwog dolls in their windows. A Golliwog is a soft toy which used to have a place in British society – it’s part of our history not a soft-toy of hatred.
In one case a mother got in trouble because her daughter displayed the doll in her window. She got visited by the police!!
If the Golliwog is a symbol of hatred then so too should be any/all religious idols. I have no faith so when I see a religious idol on display it offends me – can I then tell the police and have them get the owners to take it down? What about Action Man – he’s racist against white people because he looks like a football hooligan, let’s make him a symbol of hatred too.
A hatred rule should be a universal rule – not discriminatory.
Stop picking on the Golliwog.
Pitt is very slowly orbiting a reasonable point. Orbiting, and also drifting off into open space a bit.
In recognition of the anti-social behaviour of senior bankers in the UK in the last 15-20 years the State should show its displeasure by rescinding and withdrawing all honours bestowed on individuals for their services either to banking or to financial services generally. Altruism rather than individual greed and social fear should be the guiding principles behind the award of all honours in the future.
Yeah! That’ll show ‘em! Because it’s not possible that even one of them is not personally to blame or deserved it at all.
